BP #9 - Final Reflection on HeLa

There are a lot of social works that we do to help people. We can work for society in many ways and would find out a long list for work. From the list of social works, I think everybody will say blood and organs donation are the best. I know blood and organ donation are powerful donation but I would say a contribution in science and research for the development of treatment a tissue or part of tissue would be most powerful donation if it works.

BP #8 - Going Green Again

There are many ways to make our environment green. Some are difficult to accomplish personally and some are easy. We can practice at least easy things. I usually practice several things but three of them are as a habits. These are minimizing waste of water, throwing the waste at the specific place and using environment friendly products. I believe these three activities can work a lot if we do these as our habits.

In my country, most of the people are not aware of the environment, but there were some environment casualties those making people to think. Within a few decades we have faced several storms, floods and global warming. People in Bangladesh did not faced these situations before. Now these are making sense to us that we should think about our environment. People are talking about going green, but they don't know how take care of the environment like American people do. Specifically, I learned a lot in America how to take care of the environment that I never learned in Bangladesh. For example using different kinds of garbage cans, in home and outside for recycling, made me surprised. It also taught me how easy it is to work for the environment if anybody is a little concerned. I hope to be able to inform people in our country and inspire them about this idea.

I feel surprised when I see some people in my neighborhood throw all house hold waste materials in one garbage can. Here in New York, we know there are separate garbage cans for recycle purpose but some people do not concern about this. May be they do this unconsciously, but we should not unconscious especially in this issue. I think we need more activities to let people know about going green and the purpose of different garbage can for recycling.

BP #7 - Financial Responsibility - Summary and Response

The article "Financial Responsibility for All: A myth or Reality?" by Lubie Grujicic-Alatriste is one of the real examples with debt problem in these days. In the article writer talked about how a banking system effects a persons banking career with the lures credit offer. The writer explained what makes people luscious to ignore such traps. Writer also discussed some critical things about credit card offer for student and how they get into problems with those. Therefore, writer suggested different options for the student to deal with credit cards and bank loans which could be a better solution depending on the situations. However through the article, I support the writer's thoughts and I think there should be more steps those we need to make a better solution for the credit cards and loan programs.

First of all, the government should have a strong access to regulate the bank and credit card company especially for their terms and conditions. The government should have eyes on those conditions and make those easily understandable in few words for the people. Most of the people do not understand such conditions, but it makes people attractive when banks highlights their few advantageous offer. Once this kind of trap had made a problem. One day I open a credit account with very low interest rate, and there was zero annual charge. After several months before annual charge, I figured that the annual charge was zero only for six months and it was in the corner of the conditions with little letters. Nobody could understand without glasses,

Secondly, the government should take steps to stop pushing people by the banks marketing agent for the credit cards or loan. In resent it is a common phenomenon that the marketing people always keep people pushing to open a new credits account when people go to the bank for service. Sometime people get into trap in certain bran wash and open account that make them difficulties in future.

Finally, in banking system most of the people get lures offer and accepted easy way by the bank. Moreover, this is now consumer market, and for this reason people always grab those offer immediately. One day they realized that they are in banking trap but time is too far. It should be over look by the government, and bank should let people know more credit card could harm their financial status. In Bangladesh credit card and loan are not easy to get. People struggle to get those and bank has strict rules for those. Though our country's economy is not that much good enough but there are not such debt problem on following reasons.

Indeed, credit cards and bank loans are very important in our financial system, but some time these cause big problem in our life. People should know about these more details before sigh in and banks should have nice and clear policy regulated by government those are understandable for the account holders.

BP #6 - Mini Essay on HeLa and Informed Consent

Research is a such thing that makes people excited, thrilled, experienced, knowledgeable and so on. Researcher do research and write books on those purpose to earn money,reputations and more. Most of the people think that only the researcher are the owner of all credits for doing their research and writing books, but there are some people who own most parts of the credits .They own credit because the sources of the research and writings are theirs, and the writers would not research and write their books without them. Several decades earlier there were not such consent issue for research and writing books to publish and even these days in some place this kind of consent does not work. However, taking consent for writings and research, in a research paper, article or in a story is very important and has many strong reasons.

First of all, when we read a books, we get somebodies information through writer's personal visits or indirect reference. Sometime those information are very sophisticate and belongs as personal information. As human being it's our rights to preserve our own personal information. Law is always against the writer and publisher, if they don't take consent from the source. From The book of " The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" Written by Rebecca Skloot, we have learned a lot of medical background of Henritta Lacks's and her family too . We have learned such information that people share only with the close people. Here writer took her safe position. She took the consent from Henritta's family. Otherwise as a reader nobody could support writer to for such job.

Secondly, All kind of books like research paper ,article,or story have value in money, and sometime more than money. For this reason, we can see a few pages of book is so costly depends what the book has. If the book is about a person or related to him or her then there no way to avoid the permission or consent. It would valueless for some people but not for all. In the " The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" we got that Henritta had died with cervical cancer and there was no treatment for that disease on that time. The researcher in Hopkin Hospital did research on Henritta without her permission with that disease. They found her immortal cells those are still a wonder in our modern medical science. A researcher George gay wrote a research paper with those cells and named it HeLa. There were a lot of organization who earned huge money with that research and reproducing HeLa cells, but the fact is that Henritta's family had suffered financially a lot. This is an example on Henritta Lacks. If there is no value of a person's consent, then no body would not come forward for any invention or research.

Finally, there are some countries where there are no law to preserve personal privacy.There are also some countries where they have laws for personal privacy, but the laws have no implication, and like this my country in one of them. In our country a lot of people are being abused. People are being used by the writers as a researcher, and columnist in news paper and so on.Even in such research people are dying.Such writers are earning huge money, and a lot of things happening with those information, but the people who are used don not no even which is more than unethical an unlawful.

Indeed, writers always do a great contribution for our life. Their jobs stay immortal and save uncountable lives. Most of the time they get credits for their job but we cannot deny the people who are used by them for research, article or a theory. We should respect him or her by giving support to them, there family or at least their memories. Therefor the law and implication is very essential on a consent for personal privacy. Writers obviously need to a consent form the people when writers need them for their purpose.

BP # 5 Soda tax

Soda is a very popular drinks, and most people like it as a favorite drinks. In recent, the issue of soda tax making people emotional and turning to deviate as controversial point to each other. Some people say soda tax is a best idea to take care of public health and the government took right decision. Others argue against this. They say people have their own choice and have rights to think which is good or bad for them. They also say government should withdraw tax for soda and should give the rights to person to choice. As a self confident human being I am the proponent of the people who are against of soda tax.

First of all, we know soda have some different ingredients like carbonated water, high fructose corn syrup or sucrose, caramel color, phosphoric acid, natural flavors, caffeine and so on . In these ingredients there is no instant cause of physical or physiological problem like other beverage. On the other hand these kind of ingredients made soda unique to other drinks and people drink as their favorite one.

Secondly, as a human being we have sense of thinking. We can decide which is good or which is bad for our health. If a person wants to be healthy, it does not matter how cheap the foods are for him. He or she can take care on their way. On the other hand, if a person does not care of his or her food restriction, it would be worthless to think about his or her the food cost. At his point the step of soda tax that government is taking for public health is obviously worthless.

Finally, if government impose tax ,it does not meant that it will solve the problem of disease like obesity, diabetics, heart attract and so on. According to a article on Huff Food Post, a internet based news paper, a study found that people drinking less soda on respond to soda taxes, but consumption of caloric beverages like milk and fruit juice increased entirely. These means there is no ultimate result of imposing tax on soda.

Indeed, tax is good to pay for people and for the government to earn, but the idea of soda tax is not appropriate as the way the government thinking. Therefor I argue that tax on soda means a kind of barriers of food consumption for us and extra cost for the people.

BP #4 - Going Green

Last chrism's in New York everybody wished of snow but until now there is no snow. In Bangladesh it is too much cold now but it suppose to be not that much. These are two examples of abnormal weather and there are other in most of the news papers. We all know its a phenomenon of Global warming. Now people thinking about carbon footprint and the idea of "Going Green". Like others with the experience and information I realized what is Carbon Footprint and the idea of "Going Green".

It was 18th November of 2007. A day for me to learned about global worm. I was in my country and faced a big devastating cyclone named "SIDOR". That was of horrible experience for me even these days when sleep some time I wake up with that nightmare. A lot of people died on that devastation, and a lot people lost their everything in one day. That experience made me clear how global worming can effect people directly. Since than I always care about my carbon foot print. When I go shop to buy some thing, I used to buy the items which is not caused of global warming. I also care about food sustainability when I buy food. I believe sustainable food also a way to minimize global worm and my carbon footprint. Some time taking care of this making me difficult to buy sustainable food for unavailability and far distance . So unfortunately that time I am buy foods those are not organic. I hope very soon I will be able to over come this situation.

BP #3 - Mini Research on HeLa themes

Cancer is not recent phenomenon or new invention of this century in medical research. Through the record on a papyrus in 1500 b.c ancient Egypt suffered with cancer daises. During that time they were able to differentiate between malignant and benign tumors which is caused by cancer. Moreover, they were able to remove the surface of tumors, but they believed it caused by the Gods. The ancient Greek physician Hippocrates (460–370 BCE) developed the cause of cancer which is now considered a early theory cancer. In the theory he mentioned that excessive growth of black bile in any given site in the body caused cancer.Though that was one step head of ancient Egypt but it was not enough for the modern medical research. There were more theory about cancer in 17th century and late 19th century those gave new insight and recognized cancerous cells. However, 20th century was the greatest progression period in cancer research.

In 20th century 1940-1950 was a decade which helped to develop the theory of cancer for the next years. In this decade several steps had taken for the research such as fund for cancer, fellowship,cancer Institution, establishment of a hostel for research and successful initiatives in cancer control through X-ray machines. Though the treatment was fundamentally wrong but researcher from Australia, UK and USA worked together to conduct their best research in this decade. According to Cancer Council Victoria's 1951 Annual Report "Means have not been found to attract an experienced man from overseas to pursue Cancer Research" which reflect a research with negative response of hard work.

BP #2 - Taking advantage of someone

One day at the night I got a call from one of my closest school friend. Its was long since we didn't see each other, so we had a little bit long conversation. We were almost at the end of our conversation and at that time he informed me about a local book fair in our local neighborhood and he requested me to go there next day. I was so happy to know about this book fair and I went there next day.There were a lot of book stalls and each stalls was nicely decorated with different kind of books. I was looking books walking through each stalls. Once I found my friend with whom I talked last night. He was talking with a young guy and I noticed a kind ID card was hanging on his chest. I walked through him. He was very happy to see me. He introduced another volunteer with the guy he was talking. After that he turned to me and offered me to set at a cafe. We were talking about our sweet memories in school life. In this meantime he started talking about good things of blood donation and he was telling me how wonderful job is as a Donner. I knew what he was talking about blood donation . At that time I was physically fit to donate my blood, so when he offered me to donate blood I turned responsible to mankind. I was walking back to my home after saying my friend goodbye and feeling good physically but not mentally. I was thinking the situation what he made as a friend. It also made me more unusual when i found that as a school friend he took advantage of me for his profession. He would explain me from the beginning at the phone and I would come with more preparation even with more friends. When I arrived to my home I was thinking how he took advantage from me is this situation.

The following story came to my mind when I finished first 4 parts of the book about Henrietta Lacks. I believe my story is worthless compare to the contribution of Henrietta Lacks cells. I know researchers did really a wonderful job and still doing. I also know people getting benefit and there would be more research with Henrietta Lack's cells. I hope researcher would make more solutions for different disease. However, I believe it would ethical if all the research would accomplish by Henrietta Lacks's or her family's permission. It could be more better if we would respect her more honorable way for the contribution of her cells on her absence.

Therefore, I think it is a kind of responsibility for such organization to treat Henrietta Lacks's familly better way as we know still they are not in such good condition. I hope nobody will face the situation as Henrietta Lacks did, and I wish a wonderful place in the haven for Henrietta Lacks.
